Frequently Asked Questions


Please choose the issue you are experiencing with your Primus™:· Will the Primus™ work with Electric-Hydraulic Brakes?· The Display only goes to "4.7" when applying brakes.· No "C" displayed with trailer connected or display blank with trailer connected.· The Displays shows "0.0" when applying brakes.· No braking with the brake pedal activated, but "OK" with the manual lever.· I can not level the control.· If you need further assistance or are experiencing a concern not listed here.

Q.) Will the Primus™ work with Electric-Hydraulic Brakes?
A.) Tekonsha® brake controls are designed to operate electric brakes that are activated by magnets. They have not been tested for the use on electric/hydraulic brake systems. Please contact the manufacturer of the hydraulic control unit for their recommendations.

Q.) The Display only goes to "4.7" when applying brakes.
A.) The Primus™ detects an open ground. The Primus™ needs to have voltage on the Black wire and a good ground on the White wire to operate. Possible Causes:
  · Gain set to 4.7 volts.
· Bad ground connection on White wire.
· Faulty control.

Q.) No "C" displayed with trailer connected or display blank with trailer connected.
A.) The Primus™ has to have a complete circuit on the Blue wire to the brake magnets and then to ground, with the proper resistance. Possible Causes:
  · Open on electric brake circuit (Blue wire).
· Power backfeed on Blue wire.
· Open on ground circuit of trailer or truck.
· Trailer has electric over hydraulic brakes.
· Faulty Control.

Q.) The Displays shows "0.0" when applying brakes.
A.) The Primus™ detects a short to ground on the brake wire (Blue wire). The Primus™ has to have a complete circuit from the control to brake magnets to ground and has to have the proper resistance. Possible Causes:
  · Gain set to minimum.
· Short to ground on the brake circuit wire.
· Electric over hydraulic brakes.
· Faulty control.

Q.) No braking with the brake pedal activated, but "OK" with the manual lever.
A.) Possible Causes:
  · Control not leveled properly.
· No power on Red wire at back of control.
· Faulty control.

Q.) I can not level the control.
A.) Possible Causes:
  · No trailer connected.
· No power on Black wire.
· Bad ground on White wire.
· No power on Red wire with brake pedal depressed.
· Open in brake circuit wire.
· Control mounted out of range.
· Truck and trailer mis-wired.
· Faulty control.
